A Guide to Our Speakers at Improving OUTcomes 2017

We recently profiled the speakers who will present at the Improving OUTcomes Leadership Summit. If you’ve been waiting to register until you know what they’ll be talking about, wait no more!

Building Clinical Competence and Supporting Transgender Medical Care in the Primary Care Setting
Michelle Famula, M.D.
Dr. Famula’s presentation is focused on how a group of practitioners built transgender cultural competencies in their practices. Famula herself has provided transgender-competent primary care for almost 15 years, and previously served as Executive Director of UC Davis Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS).

Inclusive Services for LGBTQ Survivors of Sexual and Intimate Violence
Nic Caballero, MSW
LGBTQ+ survivors of sexual violence often have significant barriers to accessing care. As a bilingual LGBTQ+ Specialist at WEAVE, Inc., Caballero will explore how to integrate sexual violence crisis interventions into LGBTQ+ competent care, and how to increase access to these services to vulnerable populations.

Fostering Leadership and Promoting Positive Change through the Development of an LGBT-inclusive Medical Curriculum at the University of Vermont

Michael Upton, MD and Nicholas Bonenfant

Dr. Upton and Bonenfant have worked together to create “e-modules” of LGBTQ+ clinical competence into the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine’s curriculum for medical students. Their work builds on the student-led advocacy to increase LGBTQ+ visibility in medical education (Bonenfant is a student and Upton is a faculty/staff mentor).

LGBTI Employee Resource Groups, Propelling Organizational Change
Jennifer Ingram, MS

As Diversity and Inclusion Program Director at the Mayo Clinic, Ingram has been instrumental in developing and supporting a network of Mayo Employee Resource Groups (MERGs). Her presentation will share the successes of the LGBTI MERG within the Mayo health system.
